As a young officer Nasser fought (and was wounded) in the first Arab-Israeli war in 1948#In 1956, the British Prime Minister, Anthony Eden, wanted to have Nasser murdered, so a British diplomat said in a television interview in the Eighties#Nasser used the radio as a propaganda tool. Throughout the Middle East, Cairo Radio popularised him as the man who would unite the Arabs and overthrow western imperialism#Nasser's successor, Anwar Sadat, flew to Israel and addressed the Israeli parliament in 1977.
